Nature Illustration

When I’m not drawing, you can find me outside! So much of what I do is influences by the local flora and fauna.

  • A Flight of Swallows

A group of swallow is called a flight.

I absolutely love collective nouns, so I’m working on a series of illustrations of bird collective nouns.

These swallows are the first, and there will be a calendar full of them for 2024.

Check out some of the detail below, and a look at when I first began this piece.

  • Swooping Swallow Garland

I love watching the swallows in summer! We have tree swallows and barn swallows who visit the fields near our house. And I love seeing purple martins in their boxes too.

This garland also includes a cliff swallow and a violet green swallow.

It’s available in my shop, as well as cards and stickers.

These swallows were drawn in pencil, and painted in watercolor and gouache.

The following shots were taken in various states of progress. It’s a little peek into my process.

  • Nature Journal: Pine Warblers

I love birding during spring migration! I encountered a large group of pine warblers enjoying box elder catkins. They are one of the cutest warblers, in my opinion. They look like they’re wearing little brown hats.

There were also tons of spring ephemerals, including an impressive showing of trout lilies.

See this page a little closer:

  • Solitary Bees

There’s a lot of love for hive dwelling bees like honey bees and bumble bees, but 90% of Pennsylvania’s bees are solitary bees! I wanted to show my appreciation with these illustrations.

These bees are watercolor, gouache, and pencil. I’ve also made them into a solitary bee garland printed on recycled linen paper, and vinyl stickers.

The bees pictured are the eastern carpenter bee, bi-colored sweat bee, pruinose squash bee, flat-tailed leaf cutter bee, and blue orchard mason bee.

  • Strawberry Moon

Strawberry Moon, mixed media on wood panel, 8×8″, 2021.

This piece was inspired by catbirds that nested outside my parents window. The first full moon in June is called a strawberry moon.

This was started in the beginning of quarantine in March 2020.

You can find archival prints in my shop
